Hmmmm according to Time Magazine (2.2.2010) during WWII 12,000,000 served of which 4,000 were sent home due to their "Orientation" which included both draftee's and volunteers or 0.03% of the military population. Today in the ALL volunteer military I would guess less then 0.01% or about 300 soldiers out of about 3,500,000 serving. In other words this is such a Bravo Sierra issue the drama kings and queens in the gay community are trying to use to further "THEIR" cause not "OUR" cause like fixing the economy and putting people to work!!!! As far as this goes let's finish the war then fix it. Doing it now while we are at war is the most assinine plan ever. Why, we do know muslims kill homosexuals in their country and this change now would probably embolden more to join to defeat us "evil" Americans. That and how many service personnel would leave the military? In other words why throw a wild card in at the 11th hour when we have no idea how the outcome will be like thousands more of americans dying in the war and trillions more spent in Obama's war. All that over a minor inconveniance of 300 people?

Do you really believe there are only 300 gay people on active duty in the armed forces right now? I have no idea as to the correct number, but using general population statistics (not WWII data, which would be heavily skewed), I betcha it's more like 150,000.

First of all, it's not Obama's war. It was Bush's war, if you want to hand it to someone. Technically it's OUR war (if you're a US Citizen) because whether you like it or not, believe it or not, it was started in response to 9/11. (Yes, Iraq was finishing what daddy started, but technically that was in response to an aggressive action by Saddam Hussein.) Secondly, throwing figures out without backing is pointless. You say less than .03% of the soldiers were sent home in WWII, what if the number of gay soldiers was actually more like 20% to 30% (and it was just the .03% who got caught)? Would that make it more of an issue? I would say "Yes", because if 20% of today's soldiers are gay/lesbian, you have to consider this "How much of their attention is focused on whether they'll be kicked out for their orientation?" Especially if they're in a war zone. You want 100% of their attention focused on whether or not the enemy is going to attack (and their response). Right now, that's not happening. Finally, the soldiers can't just say "Screw this, I'm leaving." They have to either be discharged or not re-enlist when their time comes. I wouldn't be surprised if the Government would reinstate "Stop-Loss" if it's not still being used. Either way, I would say that the number of soldiers who will walk away is probably as close to the number of soldiers who you said are affected by DADT (.01%) At the most, I would say probably 5% to 10% (although again, it's pointless to throw figures out, since NONE of us has backing for them). And you have to ask how many of those soldiers were planning on leaving when their enlistment was up already (not just because of DADT).

Since mine is based on emperical data and yours is based on quiji board SWAG (scientifc wild ass guess), I'll bet $1,000 my estimate is closer then yours.

CBS must have deleted some of you original post, as it contains no empirical data. My estimate is simply based on the most recent National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NIH sponsored, I think, but not sure), which states that 7% of women and 8% of men in the US population are gay. I simply did the math accordingly. Like I said, I don't know the correct answer.

It is sad that so many in our country view our military as so weak and inept that they will be incapable of handling this change. Over 35 countries around the world allow gays to serve openly, so this is not something new and untried. But apparently the US military is not capable of dealing this.

The court is right. We should not discriminate because of sexual orientation. I'm a veteran, from '64 to '67, and some of our best soldiers were gay.

President Obama .... have a backbone for once and DO NOT APPEAL. Would you appeal if this ruling concerned blacks versus gays? Let the court ruling stay as is. If you truly believe in equal rights for all citizens then appealing this decision puts in the same bigoted group as the Republicans and the hypocritical religious zealots that oppose this. Stand up for what is right and give the one finger salute to the opposition.

I second. But on the other hand, I'd like this to go through Congress. And Democrats in Senate should also stand up and force the republicans to ***really*** filibuster if they want to stop it.

Black is a characteristic of a person, like hair color. Homosexuality is a behavior. You cannot compare the two.

More Accurate Army Statistics ____________________________________________________________________ We will at last know what percentage of gays is enlisted in the army and if the percentage changes when they come out...

Gates speaks for a stubborn and under-educated minority in the USA. He likes easy orders to follow with predictable results. When anything but those things happen, he squawks like our old Cold War opponents, the Russians, who always threatened us with consequences. We saw what happened to them. I served in the military and observed an arcane and obsolete attitude and fear that prevailed over reasoning. It was clear that fear runs and controls the military. If there is nothing to fear, then they create something to fear. Fear is their choice, while others choose to live like free people. Fear takes military into patterns that locks them into behavior without any need for logic, truth or reality....because their fear is their logic, their truth and their reality.

Will I guess the best thing going with this insane issue is that two gays can blow each other up without the use of explosives.
